The Best Airplane
3. March 2008 by Farb.
I have often been asked what is the best military airplane I have flown over my career. As you should know I have flown the T-37, T-38, F-4, F-15, A-7, F-16, KC-135R, and E-3C. My answer is always a simple one. It is without doubt the F-16 Viper. This is a man’s airplane and many men have given their lives to prove it. It is a unique design and showed much forethought when it was built. It was, and continues to be, a very fine example of American manufacturing. I loved it because it is the only airplane that I felt was an extension of my body. Literally, when they said “strap on your F-16″ … that is exactly what it felt like. Like an addition to you body. Your mind would basically tell your body that you wanted to go this way or that and then the airplane seemed to follow. It would turn you into a new piece of real estate in an instant should you not be paying attention. That made it all the more exciting. I loved every minute I was in it and of all the flying I miss; the F-16 is the one I miss the most.
